With burial -

1.  Embalming is typically part of the process

2.  A casket is involved

3.  A funeral followed by a burial is conducted shortly after death

4.  Following burial it is up to the family to maintain the plot

With cremation -

1.  No embalming

2.  A casket is not needed

3.  A memorial service can take place when and if the family is prepared

4.  The cremated remains may be placed in an urn or scattered at a special place.
