Anyone who thinks that funerals are cut and dried and left solely to the discretion of the bereaved are living in a dream world.  Salesmanship is as prevalent at most funeral homes as it is at most car dealerships.  It is a sad truth, but it has been this way for decades. 

You should be educated as to some of the “upsells” you might experience when preparing to say good-bye to a loved one.

1.)        Prepare to be shown the best, most expensive caskets first.

2.)        If your funeral home “bundles” its service, be very wary as it will likely increase costs.

3.)        Expect extra charges for extended hours of visitation.

4.)        If refrigeration is needed have the funeral as soon as possible as costs will mount.

5.)        Be careful how much is being charged for creating a program and obituary.

6.)        There may be an extra cost for graveside maintenance.  Look into this.

7.)        You also may be charged an exorbitant amount for a temporary grave marker.
